Y'all.....I have discovered how much I love decorating. This may be problematic for my husband, but I try to do so on a budget, so hopefully we won't be kicked out of any Dave Ramsey groups anytime soon.
This past weekend was of course Mother's Day -- and our church had a Women's Brunch with a couple of very special, special speakers. It was an amazing time!
And since I had overcommitted myself (or rather, my son's high school end-of-the-year functions committed the mess out of us!), I took Thursday afternoon off from work for a work day at the church. Thankfully, my boss and coworkers are pretty supportive of our work at the church, so they covered me. :-)
I had somewhat an idea of what I wanted it to look like, but as per usual with me the end result was slightly different because the getting there part was a little different. But I loved how it turned out!!
***I should pause here and say that normally our awesome church has a small team to help decorate for any event, but because I was going to have to do this while everyone else was working at their respective jobs, I didn't feel right asking them to take off like I did. PLUS I just felt it would be so much more special for all the ladies if they could really just walk in and enjoy it, you know?
Anyway, I perused Pinterest as any good crafter/decorator would do and came up with a medley of ideas.
I used Kraft/packaging paper (bought in rolls at Walmart for just under $5 each) to act as a table cover....but because I hate seeing naked table legs, I used black plastic table cloths first (Walmart again - $5 for a pack of 3). The kraft paper is big enough to cover the width of the table instead of just using it as a runner, so it worked well to just let it kind of "hug" the ends of the table. It stayed in place well, though I was a little bit concerned before hand.
Since the kraft paper covered so well, I made psuedo "place settings" for each person....with a twist. Instead of putting their name in the middle of the "plate" as I had seen on pinterest, I put a characteristic that our Heavenly Father knows us as: beautiful, righteous, redeemed, new creation, healed, made for more, etc. (The plate was just traced with a sharpie; the words were cut from vinyl with my Silhouette Cameo. I was able to do that the week before in preparation.)
I added "squigglies" as one of the girls called them on the plate. I was planning on adding a hand-drawn or traced fork and spoon on either side of the plate, but that's about where my creativity and stamina stopped, so I went with swirls.
And of course, the center pieces were PAPER white doilies (Amazon; about $13 for 120, I believe). With floral pieces and mason jars we had at the church.
I wound up forgetting to get a pic of all the food our women's group brought, but I had chargers and these cute chipped enamel / farmhouse cake plates that we used (chargers - not pictured; AND cake plates came from decorsteals.com . Be warned. It's addictive.)
And of course, anytime we get together, we have to have a photo wall, right? This one was inspired by a PW friend of mine who did something similar for her church's women's conference a while ago. I just made it a little more scaled for our space. Each sign clothespinned on that twine has a different encouragement or affirmation on it. (I'm such a sucker for details like this!)
All in all, the efforts put into it by our women's group and the special speakers made this such an enjoyable, encouraging time. So many women contacted me afterward to let me know just how much they enjoyed it and how much they needed that word from our special guests. I have to agree 100%. I NEEDED that this weekend!
Here are a few more pics from the weekend. Because it was such a special weekend for me in so many ways!
