We are “breaking perfect” together this week. We’ve already tackled making idols of the opinion of others and even started to tackle the fear of failure .
Last week, I mentioned learning that fear of failure is not from the Lord - and if we use what He has already given us, we can trust that HE will direct the outcome.
There’s a little bit more about this fear that we need to dig into, however.
Here’s a bit of hard truth to admit: I was afraid that MY EFFORTS would fail, because they wouldn’t be good enough.
I WAS RIGHT.
My efforts alone always failed. They were never good enough, and honestly, they never will be.
The only way my efforts, “perfect” or not, would be enough would be when they are done in surrender to the Father.
My “perfect” efforts would still always fall short.
But HE never fails.
2nd Corinthians 12:9-11 (Amplified Bible):
9 but He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough—always available—regardless of the situation]; for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.” Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me. 10 So I am well pleased with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, and with difficulties, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak [in human strength], then I am strong [truly able, truly powerful, truly drawing from God’s strength].
Father, thank you for being so much more than we could ever hope to be, Your strength not just fills the holes in our weaknesses, but somehow you build us stronger in our weaknesses too. God, help us to see the good in what we see as weaknesses. Help us to embrace the imperfect within us so that your strength and perfection can be seen through us. We give up to you the false narrative that we need to be perfect to earn your love or anyone else’s approval. Thank you Lord, for your unfailing grace and patience with us as we learn to trust you more. Amen.
